Common Mistakes Made by First Time Bloggers
Blogging can be a great way to draw attention to your company, product or industry. In today’s world, blogging is considered one of the keystones in corporate marketing and branding. However, when you are first starting out, it is easy to make some simple mistakes and shoot yourself in the foot. Here are some things to avoid if you are a first time blogger.
Mistake #1 – Not Having a Professional Domain Name
These days it is very inexpensive to purchase a domain name and use it for free with blogging services like Blogger or WordPress. If your goal is to present yourself in a professional manner and your blog is not already associated with an established professional website, invest the small amount of money needed to get your own site and email marketing reseller. You will be taken much more seriously and readers will be able to find you much more easily.
Mistake #2 – Not Optimizing Permalinks
Many new bloggers do not take the time to learn about website structure and how to name pages. However, naming pages is extremely important if you want to optimize your blog for maximum search engine exposure. Integrate your keywords into page titles. Alternatively, change the permalink settings so that the page name automatically appears after the main URL. For example, it would read MySuperBlog.com/TipsOnBlogging, instead of MySuperBlog.com/?p=123. Using keywords in page titles and permalinks will increase readers’ ability to find your posts and also improve search engine ranking for your site.
Mistake #3 – Not Learning SEO
SEO stands for search engine optimization and it is a key element in finding success as a blogger. The entire point of having a blog is for readers to find it and read it. However, if your blog does not appear on search engine results, the likelihood of developing a readership drops dramatically. While content is king, SEO is definitely the blog’s queen. Search engine optimization involves learning how to effectively use keywords, how to structure your site well, methods to increase traffic and approaches to bring your blog to the first page of search results. There are many excellent free resources for learning SEO online, you just need to take the time to learn the concepts and use them.
Mistake #4 – Not Using Social Media Sharing Options
Social media is here to stay and for the blogger, it is absolutely critical that you include the ability to share your blog posts via popular social media outlets. Twitter, Facebook and Google+ are major sources for traffic, so include sharing options for these and other popular social networking sites on your blog. Make them easy to see and easy to click on and use. It will drive more readers and traffic to your site.
Mistake #5 – Not Offering More Than One Subscription Method
RSS is a great option for followers to receive regular updates when you write a new blog entry. However, not everyone likes RSS. Many people prefer to receive updates via email. Also, some readers will prefer to use a service such as Odiogo, which reads the updates out loud. This service can be especially helpful for visually impaired followers.
Mistake #6 – Not Submitting to Search Engines
Although blogs are very search engine friendly, it can take time for search engine spiders to find your site and your content. Instead of waiting for them to get around to your site, each time you add a new post and update your content you should submit to all the major search engines. Google, Yahoo and Bing make this process very easy. For Google, search on “Google Blog Search” and you will find the easy submission page. Use this each time you update your content.
Blogging can be a wonderfully enjoyable and satisfying activity. It is a great way to gain exposure for yourself, your company and your products. However, if you avoid these basic common mistakes, you will find yourself several steps ahead in the blogging game.
