I have to say that the default theme provided with the latest versions of WordPress is far better than the themes provided up to version 2.9.2, but even still, on the whole it is not a choice for a serious weblog. Why? Well for the reason that you want to look unique. If you and thousands others are using the default theme then you are lost in the crowd of same looking sites.

Find free themes
The first thing to do is to search the internet for a few good looking free themes to start of with. There are thousands to choose from, some on WordPress.org and others on a whole myriad of other sites. Take your time and find a few that you like the looks of. I never merely select one and start with that, because quite often what looks good on the sample looks totally varying when you install it. I have even download themes and installed them, merely to find that they are not compatible with certain popular browsers.

So download several themes, unzip them to your computer and upload them to your blog (if you haven’t done this before, you load the entire theme directory to wp-content/themes).

Install a theme
Now sign on as your admin user and go to appearance and look for one of the new themes. Click on it to preview and then choose activate. Then have a look at your blog and see if it looks right. If you aren’t sure, activate one of the other themes that you have uploaded and try again.

Customise it!
The customisations available to you will depend on you theme as several have options for alternative header colours and so on. If this is your first theme that you have uploaded you will also need to go to settings and name yourblog and give it a description. “Only another WordPress website” proudly displayed on the top of your website does not give a serious impression!

Take a look at the side bars of you new look blog and see what changes you want to make. You might like to go to the widgets section of the appearance menu and choose a few widgets to install. You can select widgets for a whole varying array of options, for example alternative ways to display the archives. Personally, I like to have the archives available on every page, but depending on what you are doing with theblog this may not be needed. Have a look through the widgets and choose which you want to display and how.

If you are happy with a bit of PHP code then you can edit the code instead of using the widgets. As for instance, I always remove the Uncategorised category from the list of displayed categories (merely add &exclude=1). My reason being that if I am writing off topic then it is not so essential to link to it from everywhere.

Blog hosting has become a powerful form of marketing on the internet, and it can be a powerful way to get more traffic. Maybe you are new to online business, internet marketing, and blogging, so I want to share some tips for using a blog on your website to bring in more traffic.

A blog is a weblog, or a chronological way to list and share information about whatever niche the blogger wants, letting anyone get recognized as an often recognized information provider in their field. Blogging can have a great impact on your levels of web traffic in a number of ways.

Hosting a blog can either be done from your primary website, or you can use additional blogs through site like WordPress.com as traffic tools to send additional no cost web traffic to your primary sites. In either case, here are some advantages to blogging. I do both. Running blogs from my sites allows me an easy way to keep them growing and developing search engine rankings, and I also use other blogs for additional sources of traffic.

Build a Blog Following-One of the major advantages of using a blog is that it is a great way of developing a following. People frequent blogs that they find useful, and they return over and over again. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) makes it simple for people to know when you have some new information for them to check out.

Autopilot Content Generation-Because people love sharing their opinions, they love making comments on blog posts that they enjoy. This is a great way to keep fresh content filling your blog one autopilot, while also engaging visitors for more site activity.

SEO-Search engines love blogs because they are active and regularly provide new content. Blogging on your primary website is a perfect way to dramatically increase the activity of your website and therefore the attention and web site visitors that it receives from the engines.

Keep People Informed-If one of the main purposes of your website is to keep your target audience up to date with your business, service, or product, a blog is a must. It makes it easy for you to share quick updates and for your blog followers to read them, giving you more no cost web site visitors because of an ever growing following of return visitors.

As you can see, hosting your blog on your own website has many advantages like more search engine recognition and higher Google PR, more return visitors, and more overall web hits.

Find pragmatic tips in the sphere of self defense – make sure to read the web site. The time has come when concise information is really at your fingertips, use this possibility.

Become involved with a massive online business well-known as blogging. There are two ways to work from your house by way of your own blog business. Most businesses know the importance of having a blog. The majority of business owners however do not know the first thing regarding how to set up or run a blog. Most don’t have the time or interest in performing it by themselves. This creates a large chance for individuals to initiate their own Internet blog business to earn added cash while working from home.

Below are 2 techniques where you could work from home by means of your own blog business, both on a part-time or full-time basis.

1. Be a blog ghost writer and compose for someone else’s business. There is a huge market for this as lots of individuals get going and after that don’t keep up their blog. There are millions of blogs that are sitting dormant because the owner does not have time to keep it going.

Some business owners lose interest in their blogs after a period of time. A lot of of them may be prepared to pay per article if they could locate a superior blog writer. Loads of of them don’t have the time to keep up with their blogs.

You have to be proactive in discovering businesses looking for blog writers.

Searching Google utilizing a unique keyword phrase of something you are interested in will connect you with individuals that may want your services. You can begin by emailing each blog owner until you locate the number of clients you desire. To obtain clients, you can offer to write a free article so they can get a taste of your work. You will find that acquiring and keeping blogs to write for is exceptionally effortless as long as you are offering a good service.

2. You can also employ blog writers and get them writing the content for you. You can discover good writers on online marketing forums. Lots of writers don’t understand how to market themselves and would appreciate getting paid to write for yourself.

You don’t need very many writers as long as you have a few decent ones. You can create a great livelihood marketing their writing. If you position your pricing so you make two dollars on every article you sell, you could be cleaning up in no time.

For example if you were to sell 50 blog articles, you would earn $100 a day.
This is not hard to do at all and you will be nicely surprised with the return business that you receive in a really small time frame.

Several Essential Plugins For Your Weblog

Roy Bartell | July 18, 2010 in blogging | Comments (0)

Akismet
There is a reason that this plugin is now bundled with WordPress and that is because it is unquestionably indispensable. You have to activate it by going to the WordPress website, signing up and then getting an API key, but there is no excuse for not doing this.

Without the Akismet WordPress plugin, spammers will be leaving comments on your site at will, with ease. You will be plagued by rubbish comments that you have to delete. So make certain you activate this plugin.

Broken Link Checker
New to my preferred collection, this is a wonderful little plugin that keeps checking your posts for broken links. If any are found, let’s say a new post has an invalid link added or a site is deleted, which affects an current post, you are quickly warned. Invalid image links are also notified to you.

The benefits are that search engines and traffic are not coming across dead links and if you are linking to your own websites, then you are warned that the link needs changing.

WP Stats
I installed this one as part of another plugin. Previously I only relied on Google Analytics, but since using WP Stats I have seen the light and realised that both of these packages work well together. WP Stats provides real time reader tracking and ignores your own visits to the website, so it is more accurate. It doesn’t provide the high detail that Google Analytics provides, but it does provide all of the indispensable stats you will need – visitor source, popular pages and so on.

WP Popular Posts
This is the plugin that requires WP Stats and is really good for helping steer people about your site. For new visitors you want to highlight those posts that do well with readers, so the Popular Posts plugin displays these to your readers. This could help convert a one time visitor into a regular reader, which really ramps up your web site visitors stats!

Yet Another Related Posts Plugin
There are some related posts plugins, but this is the one I always use. Again, it is a plugin around getting readers to read more and hopefully enjoy your website so that they decide to sign up for your RSS Feed or newsletter.

This one works by placing a collection of perhaps related posts at the bottom of the post that is being read, happening the theory that if they have merely read that post to completion similar writings may also be interesting.

Ultimate Category Excluder
A bit of a cheat, this one, but there are times when you decide to write something that is totally off topic and probably you don’ need it displaying everywhere. Such as, I use UCE to prevent the posts in my uncategorised category from displaying in the RSS feed.

I do this so that readers of the RSS feed are only seeing the proper posts, those that are totally on topic. If I go off topic and mouth off aboutsomething, then these are not cluttering the RSS feed.

They are my six preferred WordPress plugins that I install to every new site I create. If you have any others that you like to use, leave me a comment!

Every three seconds, somewhere in the world a blog commits suicide

Roy Bartell | July 8, 2010 in blogging | Comments (0)

Okay, maybe my math is a little off, but look around us, blogs are crawling off, into forgotten corners of the web and just blinking out of existence at a sickening pace. (Suicidal Blogs)

Why?

Because blog writers are fickle and selfish, all they care about is becoming popular and rich.

If the blog they write does not perform the way they want it too, they neglect it, to the point it can no longer take it, then it dies.

This is the sad state of things but it is true.

Can we really blame the author of the blog?

No, because, no one can expect, to throw love at a blog, day after day and never get anything in return.

To show bloggers how to get more in return from the blogs they write, a great new PDF has been made available, called “Talking Down A Suicidal Blogger”. It is all about the “secret” methods that all the “guru” bloggers have been using right under your nose.

Look, I don’t want to spoil the surprise and be like the jerk at the movie theater who tells you the ending before the show, so I’ll let the report speak for itself. After all, it is free so why not grab it yourself, here now.

I can blurt out the “secrets” here and now, it sounds so simple! However, you really need to see the whole report to get the maximum affect. When you open the PDF and get a chance to see the examples and the mind maps you will get so much more than I can explain here, without plagiarizing this well written publication. It really works I am seeing more readers and profits already!

I enjoy writing this style of blog post because someone already did the work of explaining the “secrets” for me, while I get to receive credit for passing along valuable information to you.

Don’t let your blog commit suicide. Show it the love you once gave it the day you wrote your very first post. Only this time around, you will have the knowledge of the “secrets” and they will unlock the hidden pleasures only a writer and a successful blog can share.

Here is the link again to download your own free copy while they last.

Saving the life of a suicidal blog will never be easier.

Can You Employ A Banner Advertisement On Your Site?

Roy Bartell | July 7, 2010 in blogging | Comments (0)

Tags:

Might you use a banner advert on your site to generate an revenue? By that we mean could you use one to increase your revenue? There’s a big difference between something that adds to the total income you make and something that makes an takings itself, but costs you more visitors and income from elsewhere.

Free blogs
So, could you add a banner advertisement to your website? Of course you can, frequently! If you are a few free services, let’s say WordPress.com (but not the WordPress.org that you host for yourself) then such forms of advertising are banned, so the answer is “No” and the debate ends here!

Other sites
But for other systems you are allowed to add banners, either in the sidebar, the footer or within the actual post. However, do you really want to?

At first the answer must be “Yes!” and there is a chance of earning an takings, whether from an advertiser’s payments of from affiliate payments. But now look deeper into this and whether they are actually effective. That is, whether you are actually making a profit. If you use that space for a banner advertisement, what are the effects?

Too much is never good!
Well for a start, too much advertising about the page is going to put people off reading your website. It makes the website look like you are just interested in your readers for what they could do for you – earn you cash. This makes them less possible to subscribe to your RSS feeds and newsletters and less potential to trust your writing and come back.

Using valuable space.
It is also taking up valuable space. To get the best from a banner advertisement you want it high up on the side bar – so that a load of people could see it and click on it. But this will mean that you have to shove the vital pieces of navigation further down the page. These are the navigation elements that will be used by readers to come back again or find more to read now, let’s say most popular posts lists,RSS feeds , ebooks as incentives to subscribe and so on. By having the banner advertisement above these elements, your readers are possible to explore your website less now and in the future.

Reducing the value of other advertising
Lastly, if you are wanting to take part in sponsored posting then the value of these is reduced because of the other advertising on the page. An advertiser is less prospective to pay you for an advertisement if you are also showing competing adverts on the same page.

The answer?
For my own websites, I prefer to just include any banner adverts where they are relevant in key posts. For an affiliate product, if I want web site wide coverage I will create a key post, link to that from the navigation and put the banner link into the post itself.

But yes, you can quite easily use a banner advertisement on your weblog, at potentially the cost of reducing your readership and advertising from other sources. It is up to you what works best.

The Benefit Of Understanding Proper Blog Commenting

Roy Bartell | in blogging | Comments (0)

Tags:

Why is it vital to comment on others blogs?

Because it hels build awareness, it shows the other readers of that blog that you exist, I like to view this as a first impression, for both the individuals who read the blog AND the owner of the blog. And the words you write within the comment should be thought out and add value to the blog post. Try to remember people, first impressions. This is key when trying to understand proper blog commenting.

Lots of people are only commenting to generate a backlink. But there is a big error in this way of thinking. If all you are attempting to do is impress the search engines with all your backlinks, then you are barking up the wrong tree. Most of the blog commenting sections are NOFollow. You may not know what this means so I will give you a brief idea of what NoFollow and Dofollw mean.

NoFollow links are backlinks to your blog that are labeled in a way that tells the search engines not to follow them. And while many search engine spiders do not follow this policy, what they do with this link is they add no boost to your page rank, they follow it and index your page, but you do not get any of the link juice from this form of link.

DoFollow links are backlinks that carry weight to the search engines. If you establish dofollow links on high page ranking sites, your page ranking will be effected, you receive a little bit of their “Link Juice”, These links are important to raising your own pagerank, but are not as easy to come by as the nofollow links.

And there is a very good reason for all of this. Originally all links were followed. Back in the day every link carried value to it, but the result was spam, and I mean lots of it. To combat that, the nofollow/dofollow tags were added to blog comment sections, because these were the biggest culprits to the spam that the search engines were finding.

So what is proper blog commenting?

Proper blog commenting means you are adding comments that carry value. Your not just writing “Nice Blog”, or “Thanks” In order to build a backlink. What you are trying to do with the comment it to intrigue other readers of the blog, or the blog owner to come and visit your own blog. And the reality is, in order to do this you need to make an impression, you need to make your comment insightful and real. It means you will actually have to read the blog post you intend to comment on.

It also means that your link should be able to be related back to the post you’re commenting on. It if is irrelevant, and has nothing to do with the blog post topic, the readers that see your comment will not have any interest in following your link.

This is one of the main goals you are looking for when you are blog commenting, that is focused and interested traffic that will spend quality time on your blog in order to learn about what you have to say. No matter what your topic may be.

Some Do’s and Don’ts in blog commenting
-Do take the time to read the article your commenting on.
-Do offer your personal insight, whether it is for or against the post

-Don’t use profanity.
-Don’t leave hollow comments like Nice Blog
-Don’t comment on blogs that are not relevant to your niche blogging market

So, I hope this helps with your understanding of what proper blog commenting is. If you follow some basic ideals you can really improve your blog traffic through comments. And while the search engines may not increase your pageranking just because you comment on a lot of blogs. It does offer a solid solution in creating quality inbound traffic that is in search of information that would be relevant to your blog.

Building Blog Readership

Making money online has been a wish for millions across the world. In today’s web there are literally thousands of different ways to make money free online. With the creation of blogger and wordpress starting a blog is one of the ways someone without web development experience can build a web presence and readership making it pretty easy to build and income. A blogger will of course first have to establish their blog as an authority using the creation of unique helpful well written content. The problem with starting a new blog is the same as any other presence. In the majority of cases it will take many months before Google and other major search engines begin trusting the web presence which means to rank well and build organic traffic will take some time.

Before your blog becomes the ultimate resource you will need content. The reason blogs do so well in search engines and within the social media world is they are usually constantly updated giving visitors a reason to subscribe to the content and come back over and over. This is great for people wanting to make money since no longer will they have someone visit their web presence once never to be seen again. The reason it is easier to make money with blogs is your subscribers hold a certain amount of trust and when you recommend a program or product they are much more likely to believe you compared with someone coming to your website for the first time. The key to building a readership for your blog is content creation. You will need to be producing content at the very least once a week and make the content well researched as well as provocative.

Don’t expect your readership or traffic to explode overnight with a couple of blog posts. In most cases it will take hundreds if not thousands of posts before you begin seeing traffic build. It is also necessary to begin marketing your website building links from external sources which will help your blog within the search engines. One rule I have found in blogging is external links are great, but the majority should come from link bait which means it is fine to spend a little time submitting your website to blog directories and social bookmarking, but if you really want to succeed making your content so good other webmasters and bloggers link to it is key. Learning all of this takes time and should be practiced on a regular basis. If possible spend time each and every day writing and writing. This is a great time to try different types of articles and writing styles. Make sure to track your reader stats and traffic stats to find which types of articles and styles provide the best results then attempt to duplicate the articles on different topics. Once you have a large readership making money will be as simple as including google adsense or an affiliate program closely associated with your niche.
